Miami Music Week 2026 reaches its peak as Grammy Award-winning South African house pioneer Black Coffee takes over LIV Nightclub Miami on Friday, March 27, 2026. One of the most influential electronic music artists of his generation, Black Coffee brings his signature Afropolitan House sound to the legendary Fontainebleau Miami Beach for a transcendent night of world-class dance music.

From his groundbreaking Subconsciously album to collaborations with Drake, Pharrell, and David Guetta, Black Coffee has redefined what's possible in global house music. This is Miami Music Week at its absolute finest.

About Black Coffee

Nkosinathi Innocent Maphumulo, known worldwide as Black Coffee, is a South African DJ, record producer, and songwriter born on March 11, 1976 in Umlazi, Durban, South Africa. Over a career spanning more than two decades, he has become the most internationally celebrated electronic music artist to emerge from the African continent, amassing eight South African Music Awards, four DJ Awards, two Metro FM Awards, a BET Award, an MTV Europe Music Award, and a historic Grammy Award.

Black Coffee's path to global stardom was forged through resilience. On February 11, 1990—the day of Nelson Mandela's release from prison—a car with its headlights off rammed into a celebrating crowd, leaving him with a disability that would shape his perspective. He went on to study Jazz at Technikon Natal (now Durban University of Technology) and formed the Afro-pop trio SHANA (Simply Hot and Naturally African) before being selected as one of two South African participants for the Red Bull Music Academy in 2003, launching him into the South African dance music scene.

In 2005, Black Coffee released his self-titled debut album, featuring a landmark remix of Hugh Masekela's 1972 classic "Stimela," and established his record label Soulistic Music. His sound—a sophisticated fusion of African percussion, soulful vocals, and metropolitan techno dubbed "Afropolitan House"—quickly distinguished him from his contemporaries. Subsequent albums Have Another One (2007), Home Brewed (2009), and Africa Rising (2012) cemented his status as South Africa's premier house DJ, with "Africa Rising" performed at Moses Mabhida Stadium with a live 24-piece orchestra.

His international breakthrough came during South Africa's 2010 FIFA World Cup, which brought global attention to his performances. His 2015 album Pieces of Me captured this transition, and in 2016 he won the BET Award for Best International Act: Africa—becoming the first South African to receive the honor—and the MTV Europe Music Award for Best African Act. That same year, he won Breakthrough DJ of the Year at the prestigious DJ Awards in Ibiza.

Black Coffee's global profile exploded when Drake sampled his work on "Get It Together" from the 2017 mixtape More Life. The collaboration introduced his sound to millions worldwide and led to further high-profile partnerships. His 2018 single "Drive" with David Guetta (featuring Delilah Montagu) became a global dance hit. He also collaborated with Alicia Keys on a landmark remix.

In February 2021, Black Coffee released his sixth studio album Subconsciously, featuring collaborations with Pharrell Williams, Usher, David Guetta, Diplo, Sabrina Claudio, and Celeste. The album broke Apple Music and Spotify records for highest streams, surpassing 100 million streams. At the 64th Annual Grammy Awards in 2022, Subconsciously won Best Dance/Electronic Album—making Black Coffee the first African DJ to win a Grammy in that category, a historic moment for South African music. He followed his Grammy win with two triumphant sets on Coachella's Sahara stage.

In 2022, Black Coffee executive produced Drake's seventh studio album Honestly, Nevermind, co-writing and co-producing three songs and further cementing his influence on global pop culture. In 2023, his collaboration with &ME and Keinemusik, "Rapture Pt. III," debuted on Billboard's U.S. Afrobeats chart, and he became the first South African artist to sell out Madison Square Garden. His ninth studio album continues his legacy of innovation.

Beyond music, Black Coffee founded the Black Coffee Foundation, a philanthropic organization providing aid and opportunity to disadvantaged South Africans. In 2020, his investment firm Flight Mode SA acquired a stake in Gallo Music Group, South Africa's oldest independent record label.
