About Mariah The Scientist
Mariah Amani Buckles, known professionally as
Mariah The Scientist, is an American singer and songwriter born October 27, 1997 in Atlanta, Georgia. Once on track to become a pediatric anesthesiologist, Mariah dropped out of St. John's University in New York City during her junior year to pursue music full-time—a leap of faith that has made her one of R&B's most compelling new voices.
Less than a year after leaving school, Mariah was discovered by Canadian singer
Tory Lanez after releasing her debut EP
To Die For on SoundCloud in 2018. She signed with Lanez's One Umbrella label and
RCA Records, releasing her major-label debut album
Master in 2019. The 10-track project showcased her signature blend of hazy production, ethereal vocals, and deeply personal lyricism, establishing her as an emerging force in contemporary R&B.
Her sophomore album
Ry Ry World (2021) further refined her artistry, featuring guest appearances from
Young Thug and
Lil Baby (on "Always n Forever"). After parting ways with RCA, she signed with
Epic Records and released her third studio album
To Be Eaten Alive (2023), which became her first project to chart on the
Billboard 200 (peaking at #93). Her track "Spread Thin" became her breakout streaming hit, earning
platinum certification from the RIAA.
2025 marked Mariah's biggest year yet. Her singles "Burning Blue" and "Is It a Crime" (with
Kali Uchis) became her
first entries on the Billboard Hot 100 as a lead artist, both peaking within the top 30. "Burning Blue" reached #2 on Apple Music's U.S. charts, making her the highest-charting female artist of 2025 on the platform. Both singles preceded her fourth studio album
Hearts Sold Separately (2025). She also featured on Young Thug's comeback album
UY Scuti and appeared on "IDGAF" with
Tee Grizzley and
Chris Brown, her first Billboard Hot 100 entry as a featured artist.
Citing
OutKast,
Frank Ocean,
Michael Jackson,
Prince, and
Whitney Houston as influences, Mariah has carved out a lane all her own—combining futuristic soundscapes with raw, candid romantic confessionals. In December 2025, she got engaged to rapper
Young Thug during a concert at State Farm Arena in Atlanta.
