About Kehlani
Kehlani Ashley Parrish, known mononymously as Kehlani, was born on April 24, 1995, in Oakland, California. Raised by their aunt after their father passed away when they were a toddler and their mother struggled with drug addiction and incarceration, Kehlani's early life was marked by hardship and resilience. They describe their ethnicity as a mix of Black, white, Native American, Filipino, and Spanish heritage. During their teenage years, Kehlani attended the Oakland School for the Arts, where they initially studied ballet and modern dance with dreams of attending Juilliard. However, a knee injury redirected their path toward music, a pivot that would ultimately change their life forever.
At age 14, Kehlani was recruited as the lead vocalist for the teen pop cover band PopLyfe. In 2011, the group auditioned for the sixth season of America's Got Talent and finished in fourth place, gaining national exposure. During their final appearance, judge Piers Morgan told Kehlani directly that they had real talent but didn't need the group. After leaving PopLyfe due to managerial and contractual disputes, Kehlani faced a difficult period between 2012 and 2013 when they were effectively homeless, moving from house to house and sleeping on couches while trying to graduate high school. During this time, they released their first solo track "ANTISUMMERLUV" on SoundCloud, which caught the attention of Nick Cannon, the host of America's Got Talent.
In 2013, Nick Cannon reached out and provided Kehlani with an apartment in Los Angeles and sent them to New York City to work with record producer Jahaan Sweet. This support proved transformative, as Kehlani released their debut commercial mixtape Cloud 19 on August 26, 2014, featuring guest appearances from Kyle Dion. The mixtape ranked #28 on Complex's list of the "50 Best Albums of 2014" and was also listed among Pitchfork's "Overlooked Mixtapes 2014," marking Kehlani's arrival as a serious new talent in R&B.
