About Kehlani
Kehlani Ashley Parrish, known mononymously as Kehlani, was born on April 24, 1995, in Oakland, California. Raised by their aunt after their father passed away when they were a toddler and their mother struggled with drug addiction and incarceration, Kehlani's early life was marked by hardship and resilience. They describe their ethnicity as a mix of Black, white, Native American, Filipino, and Spanish heritage. During their teenage years, Kehlani attended the Oakland School for the Arts, where they initially studied ballet and modern dance with dreams of attending Juilliard. However, a knee injury redirected their path toward music, a pivot that would ultimately change their life forever.

At age 14, Kehlani was recruited as the lead vocalist for the teen pop cover band PopLyfe. In 2011, the group auditioned for the sixth season of America's Got Talent and finished in fourth place, gaining national exposure. During their final appearance, judge Piers Morgan told Kehlani directly that they had real talent but didn't need the group. After leaving PopLyfe due to managerial and contractual disputes, Kehlani faced a difficult period between 2012 and 2013 when they were effectively homeless, moving from house to house and sleeping on couches while trying to graduate high school. During this time, they released their first solo track "ANTISUMMERLUV" on SoundCloud, which caught the attention of Nick Cannon, the host of America's Got Talent.

In 2013, Nick Cannon reached out and provided Kehlani with an apartment in Los Angeles and sent them to New York City to work with record producer Jahaan Sweet. This support proved transformative, as Kehlani released their debut commercial mixtape Cloud 19 on August 26, 2014, featuring guest appearances from Kyle Dion. The mixtape ranked #28 on Complex's list of the "50 Best Albums of 2014" and was also listed among Pitchfork's "Overlooked Mixtapes 2014," marking Kehlani's arrival as a serious new talent in R&B. Their breakthrough came with the release of their second mixtape You Should Be Here on April 28, 2015, which Billboard called "the year's first great R&B album." The project debuted at #5 on Billboard's Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart and #36 on the Billboard 200, featuring collaborations with Chance the Rapper and BJ the Chicago Kid.

The success of You Should Be Here led to a deal with Atlantic Records and a sold-out You Should Be Here tour across North America and Europe. Throughout 2015, Kehlani received widespread recognition: Complex named them one of the "15 Artists to Watch Out for in 2015," Rolling Stone called them one of the "10 New Artists You Need to Know," and the mixtape earned a Grammy Award nomination for Best Urban Contemporary Album at the 58th Annual Grammy Awards. In 2016, Kehlani collaborated with Zayn on "Wrong" from his debut album Mind of Mine and contributed "Gangsta" to the Suicide Squad soundtrack, which reached #41 on the Billboard Hot 100 and brought them significant mainstream recognition.

On January 27, 2017, Kehlani released their debut studio album SweetSexySavage, which peaked at #3 on the Billboard 200 and showcased their artistic maturity with singles including "CRZY," "Distraction," "Advice," and "Undercover." The 17-track album solidified Kehlani's position as one of R&B's most promising voices. In 2018, they toured with Demi Lovato and Halsey, and were featured on Charlie Puth's "Done for Me" and Cardi B's "Ring," which peaked at #28 on the Billboard Hot 100 and became Kehlani's first top 40 hit. Their third commercial mixtape While We Wait was released on February 22, 2019, debuting at #9 on the Billboard 200 and selling 34,000 album-equivalent units in its first week.

Kehlani's second studio album It Was Good Until It Wasn't was released on May 8, 2020, debuting at #2 on the Billboard 200 based on 83,000 album-equivalent units—their highest-charting album to date. Their third album Blue Water Road (April 29, 2022) featured collaborations with Blxst, Justin Bieber, Syd, Jessie Reyez, Ambré, and Thundercat, and was met with widespread critical acclaim. The album was supported by the Blue Water Road Trip tour across the US and Europe from July to December 2022. On June 21, 2024, Kehlani released their fourth studio album Crash, which peaked at #25 on the Billboard 200 and featured collaborations with Jill Scott, Omah Lay, and Young Miko. Just two months later, on August 28, 2024, they surprised fans with their fourth mixtape While We Wait 2, a 14-track project recorded in just two weeks at home featuring Lucky Daye, kwn, Vince Staples, FLO, Destin Conrad, Lil' Mo, and DIXSON.

The year 2025 marked a major turning point in Kehlani's career with the release of their breakthrough single "Folded" on June 11, 2025. The track became Kehlani's highest-charting solo single, peaking at #6 on the Billboard Hot 100 and proving to be the career-defining moment that many industry insiders had predicted. The song's massive success inspired covers and remixes from R&B legends including Brandy, Toni Braxton, JoJo, Mario, Ne-Yo, and Tank, which were released as the "Folded Homage Pack" on October 24, 2025. At the 68th Annual Grammy Awards, "Folded" won both Best R&B Performance and Best R&B Song, cementing Kehlani's status among R&B's elite. On November 7, 2025, they released the follow-up single "Out the Window," produced by Antonio Dixon and Khris Riddick-Tynes, which continues the emotional narrative established by "Folded" with themes of accountability, second chances, and vulnerability.

In late 2025, Kehlani confirmed that their fifth studio album is scheduled for release in spring 2026, with the album title set to be revealed in December. The project was heavily influenced by the success of "Folded," which reshaped the album's sound and creative direction. Kehlani has described recording sessions in Hawaii and Miami that resulted in creative breakthroughs, with features already confirmed and the album nearly complete. With over 29.1 million monthly listeners on Spotify, multiple Grammy nominations and wins, four studio albums, four mixtapes, and collaborations with artists including Justin Bieber, Cardi B, Charlie Puth, Eminem, and countless others, Kehlani has become one of the most grounded and inspiring voices in modern R&B. Their music addresses themes of self-care, sexual fluidity, vulnerability, healing, and personal growth with a level of honesty and authenticity that resonates deeply with fans worldwide.

Beyond music, Kehlani is a mother to daughter Adeya Nomi Parrish Young-White (born 2019), a vegan, and an outspoken advocate for social justice causes including Palestine solidarity, LGBTQ+ rights, and survivors of sexual assault. Their willingness to be vulnerable, honest, and unapologetically themselves has made them a role model for millions and one of the most respected artists in contemporary music.
