About Mario
Mario Dewar Barrett, known mononymously as Mario, was born on August 27, 1986, in Baltimore, Maryland. Raised primarily by his grandmother in west Baltimore and working-class neighborhoods in Baltimore County while his single mother struggled with drug addiction, Mario discovered his passion for music at the remarkably young age of four when he proclaimed he wanted to become a singer. His mother, supportive of his dream despite her struggles, bought him a karaoke machine that would become his first musical outlet. Mario joined a musical group at Milford Mill Academy with the oldest son of comedian Mo'Nique and learned to play the piano, using that skill as the basis for his melodies and songs.

At age 11, Mario was discovered after singing "I'll Make Love to You" at a Coppin State College talent show, where producer Troy Patterson recognized his exceptional talent and became both his first manager and a surrogate parent figure. By age 14, Mario had caught the attention of legendary music executive Clive Davis—the man who discovered Bruce Springsteen, Billy Joel, and Whitney Houston—and signed with J Records in 2000. In May 2002, at just 15 years old, Mario released his first single "Just a Friend 2002," a playful update of Biz Markie's 1989 hit. The track outperformed the original, peaking at #4 on the Billboard Hot 100, while his self-titled debut album Mario (July 2002) debuted at #9 on the Billboard 200 and sold over 96,000 copies in its first week.

Mario's sophomore album Turning Point (December 2004), released when he was just 18 years old, became his breakthrough moment and launched him into international stardom. The album's lead single "Let Me Love You," written by Ne-Yo and produced by Scott Storch, became a phenomenon—topping the Billboard Hot 100 for nine consecutive weeks, reaching #2 on the UK Singles Chart, and breaking the record set by Usher by gaining 191 million radio listeners following its release. The song earned Mario a Grammy nomination for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance at the 48th Annual Grammy Awards and won two Billboard Music Awards. Turning Point was certified platinum and showcased Mario's transition from teen sensation to mature R&B artist with a deeper, more masculine voice and polished image.

His third album Go (2007) featured the singles "How Do I Breathe" (which peaked at #18 on the Billboard Hot 100) and "Crying Out for Me" (certified Gold by the RIAA), while his fourth album D.N.A. (2009) matched his debut's Billboard 200 position at #9 and featured the hit single "Break Up" with Sean Garrett and Gucci Mane, which peaked at #14 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #2 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Chart, earning Gold certification. The album showcased Mario's ability to blend smooth R&B with tougher swagger while maintaining his emotional core on gorgeous ballads like "Thinkin' About You" and "I Choose You."

After a nine-year hiatus from releasing full albums, Mario returned in 2018 with his fifth studio album Dancing Shadows, his first independent release that marked a period of lyrical introspection and creative control. The album saw Mario exploring old-school soul and spacey alt-R&B, showcasing his growth as a mature balladeer and proving he could still deliver emotionally resonant music. During this period, Mario also expanded his career into acting, appearing in films including Step Up (2006), Freedom Writers (2007), and television shows including season 6 of Dancing with the Stars (where he finished in fifth place), Empire (2018-2020), and the live television production of the Emmy-nominated musical Rent (2019). In 2024, he was runner-up on season 12 of The Masked Singer.

Mario's career experienced a major resurgence in 2024 when he released Glad You Came (December 2024) via Epic Records, his first album in six years. Executive produced by the renowned James Fauntleroy, the album included the radio hit "Keep Going (Aaaaahhhhh)," which peaked at #1 on Mediabase's R&B radio chart and #2 on Billboard's Adult R&B Airplay chart—marking Mario's first top 10 hit on the Adult R&B Airplay chart since 2005's "Let Me Love You." The album represented a full compass bringing everything back to the center, celebrating his love for music, his journey, and his connection with fans while reintroducing them to a new era of Mario.

In early 2025, Mario joined Mary J. Blige on her For My Fans Tour alongside Ne-Yo, performing 27 cities across North America from January through April. In November 2025, Mario released his Mood Swings EP via New Citizen/EMPIRE, an eight-track project featuring singles "Nobody But Us" and "Home" (featuring production by Dre Moon, Anthony Bell, and Courtlin Jabrae), with a guest appearance from Ty Dolla $ign. The EP showcases Mario's range with love songs, ballads, club records, and general R&B while maintaining his signature honesty and emotional vulnerability. He kicked off his headlining Nothing But Us Tour in November 2025, making stops in Richmond, New York, Chicago, Toronto, Atlanta, Houston, and Los Angeles, proving his enduring appeal and continued relevance in contemporary R&B.

Throughout his career, Mario has sold millions of albums worldwide, earned numerous accolades including Grammy nominations and Billboard Music Awards, and was ranked #98 by Billboard on their "Artist of the Decade" list. With over 12.6 million monthly listeners on Spotify and a catalog of timeless hits that spans over two decades, Mario continues to inspire new generations of R&B artists. His journey from a four-year-old dreaming of becoming a singer to a multi-platinum, award-winning artist who has overcome personal struggles and maintained artistic integrity serves as an inspiration to aspiring entertainers worldwide. As he continues to evolve and create music that connects with audiences on a deep emotional level, Mario remains committed to his ultimate goal: "I want to be an icon. I want young artists to look up to me and say, 'Wow, I wanna be like that.'"
