About Dom Dolla
Dominic Louis Matheson, known professionally as Dom Dolla, was born on January 18, 1992, in Manila, Philippines, to Australian parents before being raised in Darwin, Northern Territory, Australia. He discovered electronic music at a young age when his mother handed him a copy of Basement Jaxx's 2001 album Rooty while on holiday in Denpasar, Indonesia—a moment that would change the trajectory of his life. Around age 13 or 14, Dom moved to Melbourne, where he became deeply immersed in the city's thriving house and techno scene, frequently sneaking into clubs underage to absorb the atmosphere and collect records. He started DJing at approximately age 15, borrowing decks to play at school parties and local events, while teaching himself music production obsessively at home through online tutorials and peer feedback from Melbourne's underground scene.
After completing high school, Dom Dolla initially pursued a career in graphic design, studying typography and logo design at a design school. He landed work at Frontier Touring and Mushroom Records, where he designed tour posters and merchandise for international artists touring Australia, establishing what he believed could have been a successful design career. However, his weekends were spent hosting pub discos, DJing at parties, and obsessively teaching himself music production at home. He designed all the flyers and logos for his club nights himself since he couldn't afford a graphic designer—this is where he met his now-manager James, who was also DJing at the time.
